Series of Random Game Reviews Posts Part 2 – Valkyria Chronicles

Hello again~

Another review while still waiting.

This game is called Valkyria Chronicles, It is a turn-based game but has a very interesting way of doing things. I will explain later in gameplay =)

Story: The Story takes place on the continent of Europa which is dominated by two superpowers: The Autocratic East Europan Imperial Alliance in the east and a commonwealth of loosely allied democracies known as the Atlantic Federation in the west. The economies of both superpowers depend on a precious multi-purpose mineral called Ragnite. Due to its growing scarcity it results in the Empire declaring war on the Federation, sparking the Second Europan War. The Empire uses its military superiority to put the Federation on the defensive. While they had the advantage, the Empire decides to invade the neutral country known as Gallia to seize its rich Ragnite deposits. As far as story, it can be closely related to World War II. When Imperial forces launch an attack on the Gallian border town of Bruhl, Welkin Gunther, son of late Gallian hero General Belgen Gunther, is forced to fight for his life alongside the town captain, Alicia Melchiott. Together with Welkin’s adopted sister Isara and using Belgen’s prototype tank from the first war, the Edelweiss, they escape to Gallia’s capital, Randgriz, and join the country’s militia forces.

Gameplay: As said from before, Valkyria Chronicles is a turn-based game. However it gets really interesting when twisting third person action into it! The gameplay is called Battle of Live Tactical Zones, or BLiTZ for short. During the players turn it views an overhead map that shows all your troops known as Command Mode, but when you select a character it zooms in to control that character on the battlefield in Action Mode.  Movement and other actions are handled in real time during Action Mode, however you are also limited in movement by an AP gauge that varies for each type of character. There are six classes in the game and they are scout, shock troopers, lancers, engineers, snipers, and tank commander (which is Welkin Gunther). In a way, a rock, paper, scissors way is formed. Each class has weaknesses that other classes can use to take them down. A factor in this game is environment and a heavy one. Snipers can be sent onto rooftops to take out unsuspecting enemies below. Tanks can knock down obstacles to open new paths. Buildings and other structures bring cover to move about. Tall grass adds a slight camouflage  to reduce the chance of being spotted by the enemy and to reduce their chance to hit you when seen. As you advance across the battlefield, control points can be captured, which give the player a tactical advantage and give additional locations in which to call reinforcements. As Welkin, the player can issue various Orders for the purpose of things such as artillery strikes, supervising medics, and improving morale. Another part of the game is the character death system. If a character is K.O.ed on the field of battle, you have three turns to rescue them. If not, they die and are permanently removed. Another bad note on this is that enemies can instantly kill K.O.ed characters if they touch them before you can reach them.

Overall, this game is great, the graphics are very beautiful using the CANVAS graphics engine. The use of a warm color palette took emphasis away from the realistic nature of war. It is like water-color art. It is just pretty ^_^

Along with the graphics the story got me hooked. It is very  While there is an anime release of Valkyria Chronicles, I believe the game tells the story because you get to play through and find out what happens~ It really is a shame that the sequels to this game were released for the PSP… One of the reasons (if I can recall) is because of the lack of popularity I would have to say. IGN says it was one of the best but ignored games… I agree with them >_<;

Anyways~ below is a trailer, Hope everyone enjoys it =)

  1. Such a great game… I plan to play it later >_<;
    I may end up getting a psp just to play the other Valkyria Chronicles =x

  2. Oh gawd…how come I knew that this was gonna come up pretty soon…(actually, this game is already pretty old)
    My brother used to be such a total nerd for this game that he used to talk 24/7 about it…NONSTOP. Heck, I even watched the enitre anime series with him because I was bored (along with some youtube videos, to that extent >_>).

    Very good game though – it’s a Ps3 exclusive, which my brother was screaming at himself for not buying a Ps3 (he brought an Xbox 360 instead – even though I told him not to), while VC2 is a PSP exclusive. the gameplay is very different than your normal shooter (Jap games tend to be more awesomer IMO 8D). The graphics are very detailed – can’t believe SEGA made this, but they did. Overall, none the less what you’d expect from a Jap import game. Like what AozuAkazu said, the anime’s ending kinda sucked, but that’s all.

    Sadly though, what I heard from North American views of VC is that this game was very underrated and nobody bothered with it, as it wasn’t that popular here. Due to that fact, shipments of this game to North America has stopped. So, if you still find this game somewhere, better rethink about not buying it. o.O O.o
