First Look: PSYCHO-PASS

Just a reminder and for those who are still new to this site. My “First Look” corner talks about new anime series currently airing that is worthy to watch and in this I’ll be talking a few points in the first episodes. So let’s begin:

Psycho-Pass, is a new original anime series produced Production I.G. Initially it was a called “Gen Urobuchi’s secret anime project”, so it’s obvious that this is written by the same guy who did “Puella Magi Madoka Magica” and “Fate/Zero“. Psycho-Pass starteed airing on October 11 2012, and on it’s 4th episode with 22 episodes in total confirmed.

Synopsis

In the near future it is possible to instantaneously measure a person’s mental state, personality, and the probability that a person will commit crimes with a device installed on each citizen’s body called the Psycho-Pass. When this probability, measured by the “Crime Coefficient” index, is too high in some individuals those individuals are pursued and apprehended — with lethal force, if necessary. This task is performed by a special team of potential criminals called Enforcers, who are supervised by police officers known as Inspectors; the Inspectors ensure that Enforcers perform their duties within the constraints of the law. Enforcers and Inspectors employ special weapons called “Dominators” that are designed to fire only on those with a higher than normal Crime Coefficient. The story follows Unit 1 of the Public Safety Bureau’s Criminal Investigation Division. (Wikipedia)

So, the story starts out with newly assigned supervisor Akane Tsunemori called immediately to her first case. There she meets her Senior Supervisor Ginoza Nobuchika, who then introduces her to the Enforcers, and group of potential criminals who are assigned as “hunting dogs” for them, because the best way to catch a criminal is by using another criminal. Their case is about a “hostage situation” where a man has taken a random women hostage, and then the woman is shown being tortured alive. Akane was then grouped with Tomomi Masaoka, the oldest enforcer and Shinya Kougami, the loner of the group who once dreams to become a detective. Each of them are equipped with the Dominator, a gun that has the capabilities of detecting a person’s Psycho-Pass, and on the spot judging whether that person is dangerous or not. By the end of the hostage situation, Akane shot Kougami with a paralyzing shot because a disagreement how they should handle the victim who was them judged to be lethal by the Dominator.

That’s episode 1 basically. For me Psycho-Pass is part Ghost in the Shell combined with Parts from Judge Dredd. These Enforcers are given the right to judge and execute on spot. This anime really intrigues me because beside the fact this was written by Urobuchi Gen, The concept of Psycho-Pass and the things that revolve around it makes it very interesting and the clashing opinions on how to deal with criminals and victims between the supervisors and the enforcers is also a good for the brain. Should we give in to the system, or do we still use our morals and humanity to judge somebody. I really recommend on watching this anime. But prepare for some gore and depressing outcomes, since this came from the hands of Urobuchi Gen, who isn’t afraid to let his characters fall down into a spiral of agony and depression.
